Cypress

Japanese name: Hui (ヒノキ) - hinoki
English name: hinoki cypress
Origin of tree species: Japan

Color/Appearance: There are mostly cases where there is no significant difference in the heartwood. The heartwood is light yellow white, while the heartwood is yellow white or light red.

Texture: The texture is straight and uniform, with exquisite patterns, and the wood has fewer ridges, resulting in good processing performance. High preservation value. After high-level processing, the surface will have its unique luster. Lightweight, soft texture, loose density, and relatively low oil content.

Corrosion resistance: Wood is resistant to decay and has strong moisture resistance.

Odor: It emits a fragrant aroma.

Disadvantages: Currently, the age of Japanese cypress trees is generally younger, and there are white edges near the skin of the trees, which can affect their appearance. Moreover, due to the scarcity of resources and the relatively light and soft materials, it is not very suitable to use them on a large scale as materials for traditional furniture.

Common uses: can be used as building materials, furniture (beds, small storage racks, sink racks), carving, shipbuilding, suitable for the production of some high-end handicrafts (cypress fans). The aroma of the Japanese cypress bathtub is rich, and it is considered the most high-end bathtub because of its strong moisture resistance. It can also be used as a chair in bathhouses. Japan uses its insect repellent effect and sturdiness, combined with the moisture regulating effect of paulownia, to make a stand that can dry bedding indoors in bad weather such as rain.

It is recorded in the "Secretary of Japan" that the cedar is suitable for boats, the arhat pine is suitable for coffins, and the cypress wood is suitable for palaces. The Falong Temple, which was built by Crown Prince Seitoku and Emperor Tsukiko in 607 and is known as the number one World Heritage Site in Japan, was built from cypress wood. In this 1300 year history, only 35% of the cypress trees were repaired or replaced during the Showa Restoration, and the remaining 65% of the cypress trees support this temple until now.

Juniper is a tree that has survived harsh environments. Its material is delicate and tough, and it has strong moisture and termite resistance. Therefore, it is known as the "king of wood" in Japan. Research has shown that the rigidity index of cypress trees increases by 20-30% in the 2-300 years after logging, and the strength gradually decreases in the following 300 years. However, it is almost qualitative afterwards, and after a thousand years, the strength may still be better than when it was first cut.

The little-known concentration and insect prevention effects of cypress wood:
Juniper wood is rich in high levels of Fenduojing. Fenduojing has antibacterial effects, can purify the air, reduce pollution, make breathing smooth, invigorate the mind, and achieve the effect of sobering up people. Fenduojing enters the body through the respiratory cycle of the human body, helping to fight against the troubles of modern civilization diseases and achieve physical and mental balance adjustment. Therefore, there have always been statements such as "living in a house made of Juniper wood will not catch a cold" and "there will be no mosquitoes in three years". In addition, the unique aroma of Juniper wood can lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia.
